Anatomy of a Staircase
"Baluster" and "spindle" are used interchangeably in the staircase industry. Both refer to the vertical members that fill the space between the handrail and the stair tread or floor. "Baluster" is the more traditional/architectural term, while "spindle" is common in everyday language. We use both terms on our website.
A balcony railing (also called a guard rail) runs along an open edge at the top of a staircase, landing, or loft — it prevents falls from elevated areas. A stair railing runs along the slope of the stairs. The key difference for ordering: balcony railings use flat/level (0°) balusters, while stair railings need angled balusters.
A baluster shoe (also called a boot or base cover) is a decorative piece that fits around the base of a baluster where it meets the floor or tread. It provides a finished look by covering the hole or gap. Some shoes are purely decorative, while Screw-Down Shoes also serve as the installation mechanism.
A collar (also called a knuckle) is a decorative accent piece that slides onto the shaft of a baluster. It adds visual interest at specific points along the baluster. Collars can be positioned anywhere on the shaft and are secured in place. Available for 1/2" square balusters.
A Drop Shoe has a cylindrical design that sits around the base of the baluster. A Modern Shoe has a sleeker, lower-profile design. The Modern Shoe is our most popular shoe style for 1/2" square balusters, offering a clean, contemporary look.
A Flat Screw-Down Shoe is designed for level/flat surfaces — it sits flat against the tread or floor and screws down directly. A Swivel Screw-Down Shoe has a rotating mechanism that adjusts to angled surfaces, making it perfect for stair treads where the tread has a slight slope. Both types eliminate the need to drill holes in the floor or handrail.
A handrail is the top rail you grip when going up or down stairs. A sub-rail (also called a metal bar) is a metal bar that sometimes sits underneath the wood handrail to which balusters are attached. The "Screw Into Metal Bar" installation method is specifically for sub-rail systems.
A Hollow Pin Top baluster is the most budget-friendly option. It has a small pin on the top that inserts into a hole drilled into the underside of the handrail. It is typically secured with epoxy. This type supports Pin Top installation and Screw-Down Shoe installation. Angle cuts are not available with pin top installation method.
A Hollow with Metal Insert baluster is a hollow baluster that has the pin top replaced with a solid metal insert at the top. This allows it to be installed using the same secure methods as a solid baluster (Screw Into Wood Handrail or Screw Into Metal Bar), while being lighter and more affordable than a fully solid baluster.
A newel post is the larger, structural vertical post at the top and bottom of a staircase (and sometimes at corners or landings). It anchors the handrail and provides structural support. Newel posts are thicker and sturdier than balusters. We offer iron newel posts in square and round profiles.
A Set Screw Shoe uses a small set screw (Allen key screw) on the side to grip the baluster shaft and hold the shoe in place. It does not require drilling into the floor — the shoe is held by friction against the baluster. It provides a clean look with no visible screws on top.
A stair tread is the horizontal part of a stair that you step on. Balusters are typically installed on the stair tread (or through it into the stringer). Each tread usually accommodates 1-2 balusters depending on the tread depth and required spacing.
Flat Screw-Down Shoes sit flat and are used on level/flat surfaces. Swivel Screw-Down Shoes have a rotating mechanism that adjusts to angled surfaces, making them suitable for use on stairs where the tread angle varies. Both eliminate the need to drill holes.
Historically, "wrought iron" refers to iron that has been worked (wrought) by a blacksmith. In modern usage, the term is widely used to describe decorative ironwork including balusters, gates, and railings, even when made from mild steel. Our balusters are made from steel and finished with powder coating for durability.
Our SKU system identifies the product. For example: P-12R-S means Plain (P), 1/2" (12), Round (R), Solid (S). Color suffixes are added for color-specific products — e.g., P-12R-S-PS for Pearl Silver. SKUs help ensure you receive exactly the right product.
Pin Top installation uses the small pin on the top of a Hollow Pin Top Baluster. You drill a hole into the floor and another into the underside of the handrail, then insert the baluster and secure it with epoxy. The pin top is visible from certain angles. Angle cuts are not available with this method.
When ordering unfinished (raw steel) baluster samples to test fit:
1. Choose Installation Method — Screw into Wood Handrail, Screw into Metal Bar, or Pin Top
2. Choose Shaft Size — 1/2" Square, 5/8" Square, 1/2" Round, 9/16" Round, or 5/8" Round (Pin Top only available in 1/2" Square)
3. Choose Length — In 1/4" increments from 30" to 44" (custom up to 72")
4. Choose Stair Section — Flat or Angled
5. Choose Stair Angle (if Angled) — From 25° to 56°
Samples ship in raw/unfinished steel with no powder coat.
Choosing Your Core
"Screw Into Wood Handrail" and "Screw Into Metal Bar" are the most secure installation methods. They are only available for Solid Balusters and Hollow with Metal Insert Balusters. The pin top method is the least secure and may allow more movement over time.
1. Hollow Pin Top — Standard and most budget-friendly. Has a pin on top that inserts into a hole drilled in the underside of the handrail, typically secured with epoxy.
2. Hollow with Metal Insert — The metal insert replaces the pin top, allowing the hollow baluster to be installed like a solid one (screw-in methods available).
3. Solid — Strongest and highest quality. Used in high-value homes. Can be installed with all methods including screw-in.
In-Stock items are ready to ship immediately — typically Hollow Pin Top Balusters in 44" Flat Black and Flat Black shoes/collars. Made to Order items are manufactured specifically for your order with your chosen customizations (length, angle, color, installation method). Made to Order items require 1-5 business days for manufacturing.
It depends on your budget and priorities:
• Hollow Pin Top — Most affordable, good for budget-conscious projects. Lighter and easier to handle.
• Hollow with Metal Insert — Mid-range option. Lighter than solid but supports secure screw-in installation methods.
• Solid — Premium choice for high-value homes. Strongest, most durable, reduces vibrations and noise. Recommended if budget allows.
Made to Order means the product is manufactured specifically for your order based on your selected customizations (length, angle, powder coat color, installation method). This ensures a perfect fit but means these items cannot be returned unless there is a manufacturing defect or shipping damage.
Products coming soon include:
• White plastic inserts and screws for hollow balusters
• Square newel post shoes 1.5"
• Minimalist shoes with round design for 1/2" square balusters and related discs
• Metal handrail brackets
Materials & Finishes
⚠️ Important Notice: Custom Color Powder Coating
Please be aware of potential variations in finish and function when selecting any powder coat color other than our standard Flat Black. Because the shoe is designed to rotate, it is difficult for the powder coating spray to fully penetrate underneath the rotating mechanism.
Depending on the coating process, your custom-colored swivel shoes may arrive with one of the following outcomes:
Outcome 1: The Ideal Finish
The shoe is fully powder-coated and the mechanism rotates smoothly without sticking.
Video: https://cdn.shopify.com/videos/c/o/v/fce5b17637134eed81902bf54217abc8.mp4
Outcome 2: Minor Sticking & Bare Spots
The shoe may be slightly sticky when rotated and might have small areas underneath the swivel that lack powder coating.
How to fix it: You can easily touch up the unpainted portions with a matching spray paint or standard touch-up paint.
Video: https://cdn.shopify.com/videos/c/o/v/58ac54261f014a6caea505e36bd013b3.mp4
Outcome 3: Firmly Stuck Swivel
The powder coat may cause the swivel mechanism to stick so firmly that it cannot be turned by hand.
Video: https://cdn.shopify.com/videos/c/o/v/ef97a217b15044549eeb08f342fec39f.mp4
How to unstick it: Firmly strike the bottom of the shoe against a hard surface. This will break the paint seal and allow it to rotate freely.

Flat/Matte Black has a smooth, matte finish with no texture or sheen — it's our most popular color. Textured Black has a slightly rough, tactile surface that can help hide fingerprints and minor imperfections. Both are black, but the feel and visual texture differ.
Flat/Matte Black is by far our most popular color. It is versatile and pairs well with virtually any wood tone or interior color scheme. Textured Black is also popular for a slightly more tactile finish.
Iron balusters used indoors — especially when powder coated — are very unlikely to rust. Powder coating provides a durable protective barrier against moisture. Indoor environments have low humidity compared to outdoor settings. Our balusters are rated for indoor use only.
Not yet, but we plan to offer wood products in the future, including handrails, wood balusters, and wood newel posts.
Our balusters are rated for indoor use only and we do not recommend using them outside without additional protection.
However, we can add a coating of zinc primer followed by powder coating. Zinc primer helps protect the metal against harsh weather conditions. This option is only available for Solid Balusters, Hollow With Metal Insert Balusters, and Newel Posts.
Please note: We do not offer a warranty for outdoor use, but we do this often for local railing contractors who build exterior railings. Contact us if you're interested in this option.
Powder coating is a finishing process where a dry powder is electrostatically applied to a metal surface and then cured under heat. This creates a hard, durable, and uniform finish that is more resistant to scratching, chipping, and fading than traditional liquid paint. We do all powder coating in-house.
Powder coating is not strictly necessary, but it is highly recommended. It serves both aesthetic and protective purposes. Powder coating is applied as a dry powder and cured under heat, providing a tougher finish than traditional paints. It is more resistant to scratching, chipping, and fading. We do all powder coating in-house.
Powder coating is significantly more durable than traditional liquid paint. It is applied as a dry powder and cured under heat, creating a hard finish that is more resistant to scratching, chipping, and fading. It provides a thicker, more uniform coating and is the industry standard for metal finishing.
Pros:
• Additional strength and durability, lengthening the lifespan of a staircase
• Reduces vibrations, noise, and rattling as people use the staircase
• Can be installed using "Screw Into Wood Handrail" or "Screw Into Metal Bar" methods, which are more secure
Cons:
• Heavier than hollow balusters, which can make installation more difficult
• Shipping costs are higher due to weight

Style & Design
1/2" balusters are the most popular and have the widest selection of designs, shoes, and collars. 5/8" balusters are slightly thicker and offer a more substantial look, but the design selection is more limited (primarily Plain). Choose 5/8" if you want a bolder profile, or 1/2" for maximum design flexibility.
1/2" Round balusters are available in Plain, Tuning Fork, Large Oval, and Oval designs. Note: There are currently no compatible shoes listed for 1/2" Round balusters — contact us and we can source them.
1/2" Square is our most popular size. Available designs include: Plain, Rectangle (single, double, 2-line, 4-line, large, x-large), Oval, Tuning Fork, Collar/Knuckle, Basket/Bird Cage, Twist, Flower, and Spoon. Compatible with 1/2" Square Shoes.
5/8" Round balusters are available in Plain, Female, and Gold/Silver Accent designs. Compatible with 5/8" Round Shoes.
5/8" Square balusters are available in Plain designs. Compatible with 5/8" Square Shoes.
9/16" Round balusters are available in Plain and Hammered (Single and Double Ball Hammer) designs. Also available as Hollow Round Shaft Round Top. Compatible with 9/16" Round Shoes.
Balusters are available in these shaft sizes and shapes:
• 1/2" Square

Make sure to match your shoes to the correct baluster size and shape.
Basket (also called Bird Cage) balusters feature cage-like decorative elements created by bending and welding metal. Styles include: Single Basket, Single Basket with Twist, Double Basket with Twist. Available in 1/2" Solid Square Shaft.
Both are excellent choices — it's largely a matter of style preference:
• Square balusters offer a more modern, geometric look and have the widest variety of designs and shoe options available.
• Round balusters offer a more traditional, classic appearance.
• 1/2" Square is our most popular size overall with the most design options.
Collar / Knuckle balusters feature one or more decorative collar (knuckle) elements on the shaft. Available styles: Single Collar, Double Collar, and Triple Collar. Available primarily in 1/2" Square Shaft in Solid and Hollow Pin Top cores.
Collars are currently available for 1/2" Square Shaft balusters. They slide onto the shaft and can be positioned at any point for a decorative accent. Collars are available in all standard powder coating colors.
Flower balusters feature a decorative floral element on the shaft, adding an ornamental touch. Available in 1/2" Solid Square Shaft.
For 1/2" Square Shaft balusters, we offer:
• Modern Shoe
• Tall Modern Shoe (5/8" wide)
• Angle Shoe
• Flat Shoe (2" x 1/4")
• Flat Screw Down Shoe
• Swivel Screw Down Shoe

• Transitional — Oval or Tuning Fork designs bridge modern and traditional styles
• Luxury/High-end — Solid balusters with Gold/Silver Accents in 5/8" Round
Gold / Silver Accent balusters feature contrasting metallic accent elements on the shaft, such as gold or silver highlights against a darker base color. Styles include Male and Female designs. Available in 5/8" Solid Round Shaft.
Hammered balusters have a hand-hammered texture on a decorative ball element, creating a rustic, artisanal appearance. Available styles: Single Ball Hammer and Double Ball Hammer. Available in 9/16" Solid Round Shaft.
Iron balusters are widely regarded as a premium upgrade over wood balusters. They can improve the aesthetic appeal of your staircase and are often seen as a value-adding home improvement. Solid iron balusters, in particular, signal quality craftsmanship in high-value homes.
Modern baluster styles feature clean lines and simple geometric shapes — Plain, Rectangle, and Oval designs with square shafts are the most popular for modern/contemporary homes. Traditional styles include Twist, Basket/Bird Cage, Hammered, and Collar/Knuckle designs with more ornate detailing. Tuning Fork and Oval designs work well as transitional styles that bridge both aesthetics.
Most residential staircases use 2 balusters per tread. However, the exact number depends on the tread depth and the required spacing to meet the 4-inch sphere rule. Some wider treads may accommodate 3 balusters. For narrow treads, 1 baluster per tread may suffice if spacing requirements are met with the newel posts.

Shoes must match the exact size and shape of the baluster shaft:
• 1/2" Square Balusters → 1/2" Square Shoes
• 5/8" Square Balusters → 5/8" Square Shoes
• 9/16" Round Balusters → 9/16" Round Shoes
• 5/8" Round Balusters → 5/8" Round Shoes

Using the wrong size shoe will result in a loose or non-fitting connection.
Solid Oval and Rectangle balusters have additional options beyond standard solid balusters:
1. Choose Installation Method — Screw into Wood Handrail, Screw into Metal Bar, or No Installation Method
2. Choose Powder Coat Color — 11 standard colors

The standard uncut length for most balusters is 44 inches. We can custom cut them to any length you need. Typical finished baluster lengths for residential stairs range from about 30" to 40", depending on your stair rise, handrail height, and installation method.
This method is used when you want to secure your balusters directly into the wood handrail. We drill countersunk through-holes in the top of the baluster which help hide the screw and sit flush. You drill holes in the floor only. This method is only available for Solid and Hollow With Metal Insert Balusters.

Tuning Fork (Split Oval) balusters have a U-shaped design with two prongs ("legs"). When ordering, you choose the orientation:
• Two Legs On Top — The U-shape's two ends attach to the handrail. We drill holes and/or angle cut the top ends.
• Two Legs On Bottom — The U-shape's two ends go into the floor/tread. We drill holes and/or angle cut the bottom ends.
This affects which end we drill, cut, and angle — so choose based on your preferred visual look and installation.
Tuning Fork (Split Oval) balusters have unique ordering options:
1. Choose Installation Method — Screw into Wood Handrail, Screw into Metal Bar, or No Installation Method
2. Choose Powder Coat Color — 11 standard colors

7. Length of U-Shape Section — Customize the height of the U-shaped portion
8. Add Angle Cuts/Holes options
Tuning Fork balusters have a distinctive U-shaped split oval design (4.125" width) that resembles a tuning fork. They are one of our best-selling designs. Available in 1/2" Solid Square Shaft and 1/2" Solid Round Shaft. These require in-house welding, so manufacturing takes 3-5 business days.
Tuning Fork balusters have a more complex length specification because of the U-shape. You can specify length two ways:
1. Center Length — Measure and provide the center length of the baluster.
2. Right and Left Side Length — Provide separate lengths for each side of the U-shape (useful when the two legs need to be different lengths on angled sections).
You can also specify the "Length of U-Shape Section" to customize how tall the U-shaped portion is. Contact us if you need help with measurements.
We offer 11 standard powder coating finishes:
1. Black Flat/Matte (most popular)
2. Textured Black
