Ordering & Pro Pricing FAQ
Everything you need to know about customizing your order, lead times, and contractor accounts.
Customization
While powder coating is very durable, it can be scratched or chipped by significant impact. Normal daily use on interior staircases should not cause any issues. If minor scratches occur, they can be touched up with matching spray paint.
Yes! All products can be powder coated into custom colors. Contact us with your desired color and we will work with you to fulfill the request.
Yes! Customers are welcome to visit our North York showroom to view products in person. Products displayed in the showroom labeled as "On Display in Store" are available to order for home delivery. In-store orders follow our standard manufacturing and transit timelines.
Yes! The same balusters can be used for both stair and balcony/landing sections. The key differences when ordering:
• Stair sections need angle cuts on the top (for solid/metal insert balusters)
• Balcony/landing sections are flat/level (0° angle)
• Lengths may differ between stair and balcony sections, so measure each section separately
Yes! We bend balusters on either a 1.5" or 3.125" inner diameter using 1/2" Solid Round Bars or 1/2" Solid Square Bars. This results in 2.5" and 4.125" outer diameters respectively. For railing contractors, we can also send raw (non-powder coated) ovals that are already bent and welded for installation onto custom railings.
Yes! We can grind off rust and clean welds off of balusters, iron newel posts, and railings.
Yes! When ordering Pin Top balusters with Single or Double Collars, you can optionally customize the collar positions:
• For Single Collar: Specify the distance from the top of the baluster to the center of the collar (in inches).
• For Double Collar: Specify the distance from the top to the first collar, and the distance from the first collar to the second collar (in inches).
If you don't customize, collars ship in their standard/default positions.
Yes — please contact us to set one up.
This depends on the post's location and your mounting method. Here's the standard calculation:
1. Determine Handrail Height — Building codes typically require 34"–38" (865–965 mm), measured from the stair tread nosing.
2. Account for Mounting Method:
• Surface Mount — Baseline starts at the floor or tread.
• Core or Fascia Mount — Add the depth below the floor (to the joist or stringer face).
3. Calculate Top Profile — Measure from where the handrail intersects the post to the top of the finial or cap.
4. Formula: Total Length = Handrail Height + Mounting Depth + Top Profile Height.
Note for Landing Newels: These are more complex — the post must be long enough to anchor handrails from multiple directions. Always measure for the highest connection point.
Yes — we specialize in custom balusters and can cut to any angle you need, no matter how many different angles are required.
How to Order
All orders are custom-made and made to order. Typical timeline:
• Order Processing: 0-1 business day
• Manufacturing: 1-5 business days (depending on product type and order size)
• Transit Time: 1-4 business days (depending on location)
Total estimated delivery: 1 to 10 business days for Canada and USA. For UK, EU, and Mexico: 5 to 12 business days. Contact us for a more accurate lead time.
For Iron Newel Posts with Metal Insert (Top):
1. Choose Installation Method — Screw into Wood Handrail or Screw into Metal Bar
2. Choose Powder Coat Color — 11 standard colors
3. Choose Length — In 1/4" increments from 30" to 44" (custom up to 72")
4. Choose Stair Section — Flat or Angled
5. Choose Stair Angle (if Angled)
For Newel Posts with Welded Base:
1. Choose Powder Coat Color — 11 standard colors
2. Choose Length — From 30" to 44" (varies by product)
For most shoes, you select:
1. Choose Powder Coat Color — 11 standard colors (Flat Black shoes are typically in stock)
For Tall Modern Shoes, you also select:
2. Choose Length — From 2" to 7.5" in 0.5" increments
Note: For Swivel Screw-Down Shoes, all colors are available but custom colors (non-Flat Black) may have potential powder coating issues. We recommend reading our FAQ about swivel shoe powder coating before ordering.
Hollow Pin Top Balusters have a simplified ordering flow. By default they ship as 44" Flat Black:
1. Check "Change Length and Colour" (only if you want modifications)
2. Choose Powder Coat Color — 11 standard colors
3. Choose Length — In 1/4" increments from 30" to 44" (custom length field available)
Note: Pin Top balusters do NOT have installation method, stair section, or angle options because angle cuts are not available with pin top installation. If you leave the checkbox unchecked, you'll receive the standard 44" Flat Black baluster.
Lead times depend on the products ordered and order size:
• Stock items (Hollow Pin Top 44" Flat Black, Flat Black shoes): Ship immediately
• Standard manufacturing: 2 business days
• Welded products (Tuning Forks, Rectangles, Ovals): 3-5 business days
• Large orders may take longer. Contact us for an accurate lead time on your specific order.
Our detailed Ordering Guide is available on our website. It covers everything you need to know about measuring baluster length and angle, choosing installation methods, and placing your order.
Our website displays prices in multiple currencies including Canadian Dollars (CAD), US Dollars (USD), Euros (EUR), British Pounds (GBP), Mexican Pesos (MXN), and more. Prices and tariffs are calculated based on current exchange rates and updated in real-time.
Pin Top Collar balusters (Single or Double Collar) have additional customization:

2. Choose Powder Coat Color — 11 standard colors
3. Choose Length — In 1/4" increments from 30" to 44"
4. Check "Customize Collar Positions?" (optional)
• Specify distance from top of baluster to center of first collar (inches)
• For Double Collar: also specify distance from center of first collar to center of second collar (inches)
If you don't customize collar positions, they ship in the standard/default positions.
Shoes must match the size and shape of your baluster shaft:
• 1/2" Square Balusters → 1/2" Square Shoes
• 5/8" Square Balusters → 5/8" Square Shoes
• 9/16" Round Balusters → 9/16" Round Shoes
• 5/8" Round Balusters → 5/8" Round Shoes
• 1/2" Round Balusters → No compatible shoes currently listed; contact us and we can source them.
The fastest way to exchange is to return the item you have (once the return is accepted) and make a separate purchase for the new item.
The following are typically in stock:
• Hollow Pin Top Balusters with no modifications (44", Flat Black)
• All shoes and collars in Flat Black
All other products are made to order with custom specifications (length, angle, color). Check our In-Stock collection for current availability.
There are two methods to measure the angle of your stairs:
Method 1: Leveling App — Use a free smartphone app called "Handy Bubble Level DIY" on iOS or "Pocket Bubble Level" on Android. Place your phone on the existing handrail or a long level spanning at least three stair treads.
Method 2: Digital Angle Finder — If replacing existing balusters and the handrail angle remains the same, use a Digital Angle Finder (e.g., Bosch DAF220). Record the measurement, then calculate: 90° - measured angle = angle of your stairs.
There are two ways:
1. Go to the original product page (e.g., Plain 1/2" Solid Round Shaft Baluster) and select your color from the dropdown. Browse all balusters here: misterbaluster.com/collections/wrought-iron-balusters
2. Go directly to the specific color product page (e.g., Plain 1/2" Solid Round Shaft Baluster in Pearl Silver). Browse by color collections on our website.
Both methods have the same prices — they're just two different ways to order.
To ensure compliance with the 4-inch sphere rule:
1. Measure the total linear distance of the railing section.
2. Subtract the width of all newel posts.
3. Determine baluster width (e.g., 1/2" = 0.5").
4. Calculate: Available space ÷ (baluster spacing + baluster width) = number of balusters.
5. Adjust spacing so no gap exceeds 4 inches.
For stairs, most builders use 2 balusters per tread with equal spacing.
Twist balusters feature a decorative twisted section along the shaft, giving a traditional or wrought-iron look. Available styles: Single Twist and Double Twist. Available in 1/2" Solid Square Shaft.
Visit our Textured Black collection to browse all balusters available in this finish.

When ordering Hollow Pin Top Balusters, options vary by product but typically include:
• Length customization
• Powder coat color
• Quantity
Note: Pin Top balusters do not support angle cuts or screw-in installation methods.
When ordering Solid Oval, Rectangle, or Tuning Fork balusters:
• Add Angle Cuts and Holes to Top & Bottom — We will drill installation holes and add angle cuts on both the top and bottom ends of the baluster.
• Add Holes to Top & Bottom — We will drill installation holes on both ends but no angle cuts.
Typically, it is recommended to only drill into the handrail (top), because the bottom is more secure when it simply sits in the drilled hole in the floor/stair tread. However, we offer drilling on both ends if you prefer that setup.

Yes, iron balusters are widely accepted and used in residential and commercial construction. When properly installed and spaced according to code, iron balusters meet structural and safety requirements. Always verify compliance with your local building code and have your installation inspected as required.
You can browse all Flat Black balusters in the dedicated collection page on our website.
Handrails must be continuously graspable along their full length. Circular handrails must have an outside diameter of 30 mm to 43 mm (1.18" to 1.7"). Non-circular profiles must have a perimeter of 100 mm to 125 mm and provide a secure, comfortable grip. A minimum clearance of 50 mm (2") is required between the handrail and the wall.
Most modern iron balusters have a durable powder-coated finish, so maintenance is simple.
• Routine Dusting — Wipe weekly with a dry microfiber cloth or soft duster.
• Deep Cleaning — Use warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap. Wipe with a damp cloth, then remove soap residue with a second cloth dampened with plain water.
• Dry Thoroughly — Towel-dry all moisture immediately. Water pooling around base shoes or in crevices is the leading cause of rust.
• What to Avoid — Never use abrasive sponges, steel wool, bleach, ammonia, or vinegar. These will damage the protective coating and expose raw iron.
This typically requires length and angle cuts. Refer to our ordering guide for details: https://misterbaluster.com/pages/ordering-guide
Box Shipping: Each baluster is individually wrapped in bubble wrap and tightly packed to prevent movement and scratches.
